During his Macworld Expo keynote address on Tuesday morning, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air Tuesday, a computer that the company billed as the world's thinnest notebook -- small enough to fit inside an interoffice mailing envelope. It's priced starting at $1,799.
Sporting a silvery finish, the MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display -- it saves power and provides "instant on" response from the moment you turn it on, according to Jobs. The device has a slightly wedge-shaped profile that runs from 1.2 inches down to 0.8 inches high. It weighs about 3 pounds, and sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches.

The tapered shape seems to be something new for any of their products. The optional solid state drive is interesting, making them one of the first to offer it built into a notebook.

A lot of people have been wanting a sub-note from Apple. I think this fits the bill very well. It's *tiny*, and has a 5 hour battery life. Very nice. Just like when Apple ditched the floppy drive with the first iMac, they've now ditched the built-in optical drive with this new sub-note. I don't think many people will actually miss it, but for those that do they can either buy a $99 external drive or use an existing Mac as a "slave" to utilize the optical drive.

I agree. This will probably be a good compromise for many people. Just like the iMacs fit the middle ground between the Mac Mini and the G5, this new notebook fits between the lower end and higher end laptops they already sell.

Honestly, I use my optical drive so infrequently that I would not mind if it were external. Once every few weeks I burn something and, even less frequently, I need it to install software that came on a disc.
Ultraportables are definitely not very good primary machines, but this one looks so small that it would be a great second machine. I think that this may have nudged the 12" PowerBook (my all-time favorite) as the best Apple laptop form factor. I am going to have to touch one before I make that call though.

Bah, not sure I want one. not a first generation one at least. I mean it's not an iPod people! look at the size of it. the keyboard is probably going to melt within the first month or two that you have it... how can you keep the thing cool when you don't have enough space to fit a optical drive in the thing? i have a hard time to keep my powerbook G4 cool as it is!
Plus it looks like it would break if I wasn't too careful... i am not sure that the laptop providers need to keep the smaller the better attitude anymore... i think they hit the perfect thickness with the macbook pro. let's add some SWEAT features to the computers and stop trying to fit it into my wallet... although that would be kind of cool.
my 2cents.
